Blue Lagoon/ Crystal lagoon in Malta – The Perfect Day Trip

Looking for a beautiful place to swim, relax and enjoy clear blue water? Then the Blue Lagoon on the small island of Comino is the place for you. It’s one of the most famous spots in Malta – and for a good reason. The water here is bright blue. It almost looks fake! People come from all over the world to see it. It feels like a big natural swimming pool, surrounded by rocks, cliffs and small caves.

What can you do at the Blue Lagoon?

There’s not a beach with lots of sand, but there is plenty to enjoy:
  • Swim in the clear water
  • Relax on the rocks or rent a sunbed
  • Snorkel and see small fish
  • Take photos – it’s very Instagram-friendly
  • Walk around the island and enjoy the views
  • Buy snacks or drinks from food boats
Even if you don’t want to swim, it’s still a great place to just enjoy the view, relaxation and sunshine.

Why are there so many boats?

In summer, many people visit the Blue Lagoon. Tour boats come in the morning and stay until the afternoon. Some people also come with their own small boats. That’s why it can get very busy – and sometimes it is too busy. So, the authority made some smart changes:
  • More space for swimming (12% bigger area)
  • Two extra inlets just for swimmers (no boats allowed there)
  • New rules to make the area safer and cleaner
  • A free online booking system to control the number of visitors
This helps keep the lagoon safe and beautiful.

Maybe fewer boats would help even more

Boats are great – they bring people to this amazing place. But in July and August , there are just too many at once. This can cause:
  • Noise
  • Pollution in the water
  • Less space for swimming
  • A crowded feeling
With fewer boats in those months, it would be quieter and more peaceful. And the sea and nature would be even better protected.

How to get there?

Try to go during off-peak hours or in the off-season. You can then visit the Blue Lagoon by boat from several places in Malta, like Sliema, Bugibba, or Cirkewwa. There are:
  • Big tour boats (with sunbeds and music)
  • Fast boats (for a quick ride)
  • Small group tours (for a relaxed vibe)
You can choose what fits your style and budget. Most tours take half a day or a full day. Want to go? Check out here! Final tip: The earlier you go, the better! Morning light is beautiful, and it’s less busy. Bring water, sunscreen and a camera – and get ready to fall in love with Malta’s Blue Lagoon.
