Good Friday is one of the most sacred days in Malta. In towns and villages, people commemorate the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. Malta is Catholic, and this faith is taken very seriously, especially visible during Easter. Since the 16th century, processions have been held on the islands. Life-size statues depict scenes from Christ’s Passion. They are carried through narrow streets, followed by participants in biblical clothing. Shops close. Church bells are silent. The pace is slow. The atmosphere is solemn and quiet. Only marching music can be heard. It is an impressive sight and something every visitor to the islands should experience.
