A luzzu is a typical Maltese fishing boat that you’ll find in the small village harbours on the Maltese islands. They float beautifully in the azure waters and are cheerfully painted in bright colours. The boats feature eyes painted on the bow, gazing over the harbour. These eyes, known as the Eye of Osiris, were believed to protect fishermen from evil spirits while they were out at sea. The luzzu isn’t just a boat—it’s part of Malta’s identity. Whether you see them bobbing gently in Marsaxlokk’s harbour or ferrying people across Valletta’s Grand Harbour, these boats are a striking sight.
