The Carnival in Nadur is one of the unique and spontaneous carnival events in Gozo. The whole village turns into a colourful festival with masks, floats, live bands, and open-air bars. Every year, this celebration attracts many visitors from Malta who travel to Gozo for a long weekend of fun. What makes the Nadur Carnival special is that it is not organized by a committee, and there are no official rules. And you can feel it! As soon as the sun sets, the streets fill with masked and costumed people in the funniest and most bizarre outfits. Some people act out entire scenes, making it a very entertaining and unexpected experience. The festival has earned names like the Spontaneous Carnival, the Grotesque Carnival, and the Macabre Carnival. The latter name comes from the dark humour and eerie themes that some participants use in their costumes and performances. Nadur is a small village on the island of Gozo, with around 4,500 residents. Besides the carnival, it is also famous for the religious feast of St. Peter & St. Paul, celebrated on June 29. However, during the five days before Ash Wednesday, the village is all about celebration, creativity, and endless fun. People of all ages join the festival, from children wearing simple masks to adults who go all out with extravagant outfits. Some costumes are humorous, while others are mysterious or even slightly scary. Many locals and visitors enjoy watching the costumed people parade through the streets, dance, and put on spontaneous performances. The energy is electric, and the atmosphere is full of laughter and excitement. In 2005, Nadur Carnival was named the World Carnival Capital when it hosted the largest-ever gathering of international carnival organizers and officials during the Global Carnival City Summit. This recognition showed how unique and special the Nadur Carnival truly is. If you are looking for a carnival experience unlike any other, Nadur is the place to be. Whether you participate in the madness or just watch from the side, it’s a festival you will never forget!
